Alabama mask order ending April 9, changes for hospitals, restaurants: What you need to know

Gov. Kay Ivey announced Thursday the order requiring Alabamians to wear facial coverings in public places will be allowed to expire April 9 at 5 p.m. The order was first put in place in July and has been extended several times. Ivey said the lower case and hospitalization numbers prompts the changes.

“Folks, we’re not there yet, but goodness knows we’re getting closer,” she said, adding the month extension allows for businesses to put plans in place.

While the mask order will remain – at least temporarily – Ivey did announce other changes.

Here’s what you need to know:

Mask order ending

Alabama’s order for facial coverings requires people to wear masks in public places. That order will expire April 9 and after that, wearing a mask will be a “matter of personal responsibility” instead of a “government mandate.”

Will some places still require masks?

Several large retailers, including Target, CVS and Kroger, announced they will continue to require them.

Also, an order by President Joe Biden will require masks in federal buildings and properties as well as public transportation.

What about schools?

Local school boards will be able to determine if students and teachers will be required to wear masks. You can see more on that here.

Hospitals and nursing home changes

Patients and residents of hospitals and nursing homes will be allowed as many as two caregivers or visitors at a time. Previously, that was capped at one.

Federal restrictions regarding nursing homes will remain and can substantially impact if visitors are allowed. You can see more on those requirements here.

Senior citizen centers

Senior centers will be allowed to resume programming but will be limited to outdoor activities. Congregate meals will not be allowed to resume but food will still be available by curbside pick-up or delivery. The Alabama Department of Senior Services will develop guidelines for activities. The change goes into effect March 6.

Restaurant, bars and breweries may remain open but with no limit on party sizes at tables. The previous order limited parties to eight people. Partitions or leaving 6 feet between tables are still required. The change goes into effect March 6. You can see more on that here.

Summer camps

Summer camps may open subject to social distancing and sanitation rules. The social distancing requirement was changed to mirror the one used for schools, the governor’s office said.
